What Happens If You Sing For 5 Minutes Every Day?
Feb 13, 2025
Have you ever wondered if just five minutes of singing practice each day could make a real difference in your voice? In this episode, we’ll explore exactly that! Plus, I’ll share practical vocal exercises that you can use to maximize your practice time and see real improvements in your singing.
Why Singing Along to Songs Isn’t Enough
Many singers make the mistake of turning on Spotify, YouTube, or the radio and singing along with their favorite songs as their main form of practice. While this is fun, it’s not the most effective way to train your voice. Trained singers approach practice differently—they follow structured vocal exercises that develop specific areas of their voice.
The Importance of Intentional Practice
When I first started practicing, I sang for 30 minutes every day, yet I still struggled to hit high notes. I later realized that I was training the wrong part of my voice! Instead of focusing on my head voice, which helps with high notes, I was overworking my chest voice. That’s why singing more isn’t the answer—it’s about singing the right things that target the vocal skills you need to improve.
What to Do If You Only Have 5 Minutes
If you only have five minutes a day to train, the best way to use that time is with specific vocal exercises that target your goal. For example, if you want to sing high notes effortlessly, you need exercises that develop your head voice and mix voice. If you’re a member of the Singing Insiders, you have access to a Vocal Workout Library filled with targeted exercises to help you build those skills.
What If You Just Want to Sing a Song?
If vocal exercises feel boring to you, another option is to intentionally choose a song that aligns with your vocal goal. For instance, if you’re working on high notes, pick a song that requires you to use your mix voice or head voice. This way, you can still sing a song while making progress toward your goal.
Four Powerful Exercises to Try in Five Minutes
If you’re not sure where to start, here are four foundational exercises that will help improve your singing in just five minutes a day:
- Breath Support Exercise: Slow down a song and focus on diaphragmatic breathing. As you sing, feel your belly move in and out, ensuring you have proper breath support.
- Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract (SOVT) Exercise: Use a “vvv” sound to create back pressure, which massages the vocal cords and helps with vocal efficiency.
- Range Expansion Exercise: Sing a simple five-note scale on “nnn” to gradually extend your vocal range.
- Vocal Cord Closure Exercise: Use vocal fry (that low, creaky sound) to strengthen vocal cord connection and eliminate breathiness in your singing.
Training Over Talent: Your Voice Is a Skill You Can Develop
As you can see from today’s episode, great singing isn’t just about natural talent—it’s about training. Singing is a skill that you can improve with the right exercises and techniques. However, not every training method works for every singer, which is why it’s important to find what fits your unique voice.
