Learn to sing high, powerful notes without straining using the power of the "coughing muscle". Let's dive into it!

This week, I want to introduce you to a magical muscle that can revolutionize your singing - the "coughing muscle." Don't be fooled by the name; this muscle is not about sounding like you have a cold. Instead, it's the key to quickly hitting high notes without straining your voice.

One of the common mistakes beginners make when aiming for high notes is pushing and straining their voices around the larynx. We want to avoid this as it may lead to pitch issues and unnecessary loudness. Singing high notes can sometimes mean singing loudly!

So, here's the secret: we will tap into the power of our "coughing muscle" to achieve balanced and controlled vocal performance. This muscle, scientifically known as the transversus abdominis, is activated when we cough.

Let's find it together! Place your finger on your navel and another hand below it. When you cough, you should feel a movement in that area - the coughing muscle in action.

Now, let's activate it with a simple exercise. Say "he, he, he, he" while feeling your belly go up and down with each "he." This is the core of your breath support. Remember, the energy should come from here, not from straining the larynx.

The trained singer combines the power of the chest voice muscle with the range and flexibility of the head voice muscle. This creates a beautiful balance that allows you to hit high notes powerfully and effortlessly.

If you ever feel strain, tension, or hoarseness while singing, it's a sign that something is off. Trained singers know this and focus on their vocal technique to eliminate these issues.

To put all this into practice, let's work on a song together - the chorus of "We Are Young" by Fun.

As you sing, focus on activating the coughing muscle and feeling your abdominal muscles tense up. This breath support will give you the control you need for those high notes.
