Learn To Sing In Less Than 10 Min a Day

In this episode you will learn how to sing better in less than ten minutes a day. Let's get started!

Many beginner singers make common mistakes such as singing along with songs on the radio without considering their vocal technique. They often lack a consistent practice routine. If you are here, it means you are ready to move beyond these mistakes and become a trained and confident singer.

The Importance of Consistency

One of the key differences between beginner and trained singers is consistency. Many beginners believe they can improve by singing for two hours on the weekend. However, trained singers know that it is more effective to practice every day, even if it is just for ten minutes. Consistent repetition of exercises helps to embed them into muscle memory, leading to significant improvements.

The Four Pillars of the Sing Your (Self) To Freedom Formula

Our approach to singing improvement is based on four main pillars:

  • Mindset
  • Vocal Technique
  • Creativity
  • Connection

Today, we will focus on the vocal technique pillar. This pillar is divided into four phases that help you achieve vocal freedom, allowing you to sing anything you want, whenever you want.

Phase 1: Breath Support

The first phase focuses on the foundations of singing, particularly breath support and diaphragmatic breathing. One exercise to activate your diaphragmatic breathing involves using the sounds "he" and "ha" while ensuring your abdominal muscles become active with each sound.

Let's try it together:

  • He, he, he
  • Ha, ha, ha

Ensure your belly moves with each sound. This exercise helps train your abdominal muscles and improve your breath support.

Phase 2: Registers

The second phase deals with transitioning between different vocal registers, such as chest voice and head voice. An exercise to practice this involves using the syllables "a" and "u".

Here's how to do it:

  • Start with chest voice on "a"
  • Switch to head voice on "u"
  • Return to chest voice on "a"

Repeat this exercise, ensuring you return to chest voice each time. This helps in developing control over your vocal registers.

Phase 3: Shaping Vocal Color

This phase is about shaping the color of your voice to sound how you want it to. You can make your voice sound warmer or sharper using specific techniques.

Creating Warmth

To create a warmer sound, imagine biting into a big apple, which opens up your vocal tract. Try singing "ma" while maintaining this open mouth position.

  • Ma, ma, ma

Creating Sharpness

For a sharper sound, use the "e" sound with a broad smile, placing the sound at the front of your mouth.

  • Yee, yee, yee

Practice these exercises to explore different vocal colors.

Phase 4: Flexibility

The final phase focuses on flexibility and adding extras to your singing, such as vibrato, vocal effects, dynamics, and belting. One exercise to activate vibrato involves alternating between two notes rapidly.

Here's how to do it:

  • Choose two notes
  • Alternate between them on an "e" sound
  • Speed up until you lose control and vibrato appears

This exercise helps in developing the flexibility of your larynx, which is essential for vibrato.

Practice Routine

If you practice these exercises daily for less than ten minutes, you will notice significant progress in your singing. Focus on each of the four phases: breath support, registers, vocal color, and flexibility. This structured approach will help you develop your voice efficiently.
