Lax Vox For Beginners
Feb 20, 2025
So, you might be wondering how this tool called Lax Vox can help you improve your vocal practice and keep your voice healthy. Well, in this episode, that's exactly what we're diving into! You'll get a complete breakdown of how to use Lax Vox and how it can help you release tension, restore your voice, and even train for those high notes. Let’s get started!
What Is Lax Vox?
First things first—what even is Lax Vox? Well, it's a type of SOVT (semi-occluded vocal tract) exercise that works through back pressure. The basic idea is that you put a tube into a bottle of water and blow into it, which creates resistance and helps your vocal cords function more efficiently.
Now, a quick disclaimer: the bottle I’m using isn’t the official Lax Vox bottle, but any bottle will do because the principle remains the same. The size of the tube and the depth of the water both play a role in how much back pressure you create, and that’s what makes this tool so versatile for singers.
How Back Pressure Works
When you sing, air flows out from your lungs and through your vocal cords. With Lax Vox, as you blow air into the tube, some of that air pressure comes back toward your vocal cords. This dual airflow interaction helps relax the muscles, improve vocal function, and support vocal training.
The key thing to understand is that different levels of back pressure serve different purposes. If your goal is to release tension and reset your voice, you’ll want low back pressure, which means a bigger tube and shallow water depth (around 2 cm for women, 3 cm for men). But if you’re aiming to train your voice, strengthen your mix voice, or hit higher notes, then you need higher back pressure—meaning a smaller tube and deeper water depth (about 3-4 cm for women, 4-5 cm for men).
Exercises to Reset and Restore Your Voice
If you’re experiencing vocal fatigue, tension, or hoarseness, these exercises will help you reset your voice and restore its natural flexibility.
1. Blowing Bubbles (Without Sound)
The simplest way to start is by just blowing into the tube without making any sound—literally just making bubbles! The key is to keep your cheeks loose so that the air flows freely. Try doing this for about a minute.
2. Adding a Gentle Sound
Next, let’s add a subtle “ooh” sound while blowing into the tube. This helps engage the vocal cords gently without straining them. Alternate between no sound and sound to transition smoothly.
3. Holding a Steady Tone
Pick a comfortable pitch and hold it while blowing into the tube. The goal here is to maintain a consistent airflow and sound, avoiding any sudden air bursts or stops. If the airflow isn't steady, you might feel a tickling sensation in your throat—so adjust as needed!
4. Accent Pulses
Now, we add some dynamic movement. Use short pulses in your voice, almost like little accents: “uh-uh-uh”. This helps improve vocal control and flexibility.
5. Vocal Waves and Slides
To really stretch out your vocal cords, try moving up and down in pitch while using the tube. Start low, then glide up a little higher each time—like waves! You can also do full slides from your lowest note to your highest and back down.
Using Lax Vox to Train Your Voice
Now, let’s talk about how to use Lax Vox for building vocal strength and singing high notes with ease. The same principles apply, but here we want to create higher back pressure for more vocal resistance.
1. Vocal Stretching with Waves
Before jumping into training, warm up with vocal waves just like before, but this time using a smaller tube and deeper water depth. This helps engage your vocal support system.
2. Singing Scales with the Tube
You can use your regular singing exercises or scales while blowing into the tube. This reinforces healthy vocal technique and strengthens your mix voice.
3. Singing Songs with Lax Vox
One of the best ways to apply this tool is by using it on challenging sections of songs. If there’s a part in a song that feels difficult—maybe a high note or a tricky transition—sing it first through the tube, then alternate between the tube and your full voice. This helps your voice find the right placement and keeps your technique consistent.
The Key to Vocal Freedom
As you can see, Lax Vox isn’t just a tool for vocal health—it’s a powerful training method to help you expand your range, master your mix voice, and sing effortlessly. And here’s the thing: vocal technique always beats talent. Mastering technique gives you vocal freedom, and a major part of that is understanding and activating your mix voice.
