How To Practice Singing

inspiration mindset Dec 07, 2023

This week, we're diving deep into a topic near and dear to every singer's heart: practice. See, many singers believe that the more they sing, the better they get. But is that actually true? Let's dive in!

Now, I get it. We've all heard the saying, "Practice makes perfect," but is it that simple? So, you love to sing, but you might be thinking, "Does singing more automatically make me better?" It's a common belief rooted in the "practice makes perfect" mantra we've all heard. But is it true for singing? That's what we're going to explore today.

Let's redefine what practice means. It's not just mindlessly singing along to your favorite tunes. In my book, practice is about training your vocal muscles with intent. Proper practice involves conscious effort, focusing on specific vocal techniques to enhance your skills. Think of it as training your vocal muscles strategically to achieve your singing goals.

Imagine if you were learning the piano. You wouldn't just randomly hit keys; you'd practice scales and work on finger movements. Similarly, singing requires purposeful and conscious practice.

But here's the kicker – is more always better? Not necessarily. Like top athletes, as do singers, they need rest to perform at their best. Your vocal cords and muscles need time to recover and rejuvenate. It's not just about singing every day; it's about finding balance.

So, here's your mission for the week:

First, engage in conscious practice. Set a specific goal for your practice session. What technique do you want to improve? What small step can you take toward your ultimate singing dream? Be intentional.

Secondly, embrace balance.

Plan your rest. Vocal rest, physical rest, and mental rest. Yes, your mind needs a break too. Meditate, dance, take a walk – find what works for you.
