How To Avoid Vocal Fatigue
Apr 10, 2025
Have you ever felt your voice giving up after a long rehearsal or performance? Whether you're singing a setlist for hours or getting through a two-hour choir practice, it’s essential to learn how to avoid vocal fatigue so your voice stays strong and tension-free. In this episode, I’m going to share practical techniques that will help you sing for hours without that dreaded hoarseness or strain. Let’s dive in!
Why Vocal Fatigue Happens
If you're a beginner, you might think that tension or hoarseness is just part of the singing process. A lot of new singers experience these symptoms after singing for a while and believe it’s normal, thinking, “Tomorrow will be better!” However, trained singers know that tension or hoarseness is actually a signal from your body that something isn’t right. It’s a red flag that you may be using your voice incorrectly or pushing it too hard. Recognizing these signs early is key to avoiding long-term damage and ensuring your voice stays healthy.
1. Warm Up and Cool Down
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to avoid vocal fatigue is by warming up and cooling down your voice properly. A good warm-up prepares your vocal cords for singing, while a cool-down stretches them out, releasing any built-up tension. Even though this might sound obvious, the real challenge lies in making it a consistent part of your routine. Are you warming up before each session and cooling down afterward? If not, this could be the first step in improving your vocal stamina.
2. Perfect Your Vocal Technique
Your vocal technique plays a huge role in how efficiently your voice can work during long singing sessions. Whether you're part of the Singing Insiders community or not, practicing your vocal exercises consistently helps get the techniques into your muscle memory. This includes things like breath support, mix voice, and twang. The more you practice these techniques, the less your body will need to think about them consciously when you perform. Instead, your voice will naturally flow without strain.
3. Be Strategic About Your Set List
The next thing to think about is your repertoire. If you have control over your setlist, try to be strategic about how you arrange your songs. For example, you might want to place high-intensity songs at different points during your performance to give your voice a rest. Balancing high-energy songs with softer ones allows your vocal cords to recover while still delivering a powerful performance. If you're in a choir or performing with others, it’s still helpful to know which songs are more intense for you so you can prepare mentally and physically for them.
4. Use SOVT Exercises
SOVT stands for Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract, and it’s a technique that helps reduce vocal fatigue by creating back pressure in your vocal cords. Tools like a singing straw or exercises such as lip trills create airflow that helps your vocal cords come together in the optimal position for singing. This technique massages your vocal cords, reducing tension and helping to preserve your voice. Try incorporating SOVT exercises into your warm-ups, cooldowns, or breaks during longer performances to keep your voice feeling fresh.
5. Take Advantage of Vocal Fry
Vocal fry is a super helpful technique when you need to give your voice a break during a performance. It’s a gentle sound that allows your vocal cords to relax while still staying engaged. I personally use vocal fry while leading my choir or performing with a band, especially when I need a quick rest between songs. By using vocal fry, you’re letting your vocal cords rest and recover without losing your vocal power.
What to Do If You Still Experience Vocal Fatigue
Even after practicing all of these techniques, it’s still possible to experience some vocal fatigue. If that happens, there are a few things you can do to recover:
- Vocal rest: Rest your voice and avoid any unnecessary talking or singing.
- Vocal reset: Use SOVT exercises and vocal fry to help reset your voice and relieve tension.
- Hydration: Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and try steaming or nebulizing to hydrate your vocal cords more effectively.
- Focus on technique: If your voice is tired but you still have to sing, focus on your vocal technique—being mindful of your breath support, where you're singing in your range, and using your mix voice can make a huge difference.
