False Facts About Singing Everyone Actually Believes

inspiration Mar 20, 2025

Have you ever heard things like, "You need to be born with a great voice to sing well" or "You must have talent to be a great singer"? These so-called "facts" get thrown around all the time, but guess what? They’re simply not true. In this episode, we’re busting some of the most common singing myths that could be holding you back from reaching your full potential. Let’s dive in!

Myth #1: You Need Talent to Be a Great Singer

This is one of the biggest misconceptions in the singing world. The idea that only naturally gifted people can sing well is just not true. Singing is a skill, and like any skill, it can be learned and developed with proper training. Think about Ed Sheeran—he once shared an old recording of himself singing, and it was far from great. But through training, he transformed his voice into what we know today. I wasn’t born with a perfect voice either. My mom even told me I sounded terrible when I first started!

The key isn’t talent—it’s having the right vocal training. If you practice the wrong way, you won’t see progress. I used to sing for 30 minutes every day and still felt stuck because I was training incorrectly. But once I found the right techniques, everything changed. So, stop worrying about whether you were "born with it" and focus on learning the right methods.

Myth #2: Hoarseness and Vocal Fatigue Are Normal

Many singers believe that feeling hoarse or fatigued after singing for a long time is just part of the process. Maybe you’ve had a two-hour performance or choir rehearsal and your voice feels tired—so you assume that’s normal. But here’s the truth: it’s not. Hoarseness is your body’s way of telling you that something is off. You may be overusing, straining, or pushing your voice in an unhealthy way.

Once I learned to recognize these signs and adjusted my technique accordingly, I completely eliminated hoarseness from my singing routine. If I ever start feeling even a hint of strain, I stop and diagnose the issue—just like a doctor. Maybe it’s my breath support, or maybe I need to shift into mix voice. Being aware of these signals will help you sing healthily for years to come. Remember, you only have one voice—take care of it!

Myth #3: Copying the Original Artist’s Technique is the Right Way to Sing

If you’re an experienced singer, you may have fallen into this trap. You listen to the original artist of a song and try to mimic their technique, assuming that’s the "correct" way to sing it. But here’s the thing—what works for them might not work for you.

Let’s say you’re singing "Easy On Me" by Adele. You might notice she’s using mix voice and think, "Okay, I have to use mix voice too." But what if your voice actually sounds better in chest voice? The goal isn’t to copy the artist’s technique—it’s to achieve the same outcome in a way that suits your unique voice. Adele might use mix voice, while Christina Aguilera might belt, and Beyoncé might add twang. You have to find what works for you.

If you’re a beginner singer, it’s even more important to focus on developing a solid technical foundation rather than just singing along with your favorite artists. Once you have the technique, you can apply it in a way that fits your voice best.

Myth #4: Technique Leads to Confidence

Many singers believe that if they just master the right vocal techniques, they’ll automatically feel confident enough to perform. But in reality, it often works the other way around—confidence comes first, and then technique follows.

I once worked with a singer named Sophia, who was struggling with belting. She had the technical knowledge but was afraid to be loud. She realized that her fear of letting her voice be heard was actually holding her back from executing the technique properly. Once she worked through her confidence issues, her belting transformed effortlessly.

Confidence and technique feed into each other. As you gain confidence, you use techniques more effectively, which then boosts your confidence even more. It’s an upward spiral! So don’t wait to "feel ready" before putting yourself out there—start building confidence now, and the technique will follow.

Let Go of These Myths and Unlock Your Potential

Now that we’ve busted these common singing myths, I hope you feel empowered to let go of any limiting beliefs that have been holding you back. Singing isn’t about talent—it’s about the right training. Hoarseness isn’t normal—it’s a sign to adjust. Copying an artist’s technique isn’t the goal—achieving the sound in a way that suits you is. And confidence isn’t just a byproduct of technique—it’s a key ingredient in your success.
