Craft Your Own Pre-Performance Routine
Jan 18, 2024The art of a "perfect" performance is more than just hitting the right notes—it's about connecting with your audience, whether you're singing in the shower, at home, on social media, or on a stage. In this blog post, we'll delve into the pre-performance routine that helped me sail through a special moment – singing at my own wedding.
Step 0: Choosing the Right Repertoire
Before diving into the nitty-gritty, let's address the fundamental step: choosing the right song. For me, it was "By Your Side" covered by John Legend—a song that resonated with the depths of my soul. Your song should be one you connect with, whether you're singing at a wedding, on stage, or just in the comfort of your own home.
Step 1: Studying and Rehearsing
Once the song is chosen, it's time to study and rehearse. Everyone has their own approach—I personally like listening to the original track, playing it on the piano, and ensuring I'm in the right key. Rehearsing is more than just going through the motions; it's about embedding the song into your muscle memory. This step is crucial, as it builds the foundation for a confident and stress-free performance.
Step 2: Mental Preparation - The Often Overlooked Key
The mental aspect of performance is often overlooked but is just as vital as vocal technique. Mental preparation involves visualizing your performance going perfectly. I found that repeatedly visualizing my wedding performance—imagining the venue, the piano, and my future husband in front of me—instilled a sense of calm and confidence.
Interestingly, the brain doesn't distinguish between real experiences and vivid visualizations. By the time the actual performance arrived, it felt like I had been there before, eliminating pre-show jitters.
Step 3: Putting It All Together - The Inner Work
The final piece of the preparation puzzle is the inner work. Trusting yourself is paramount. The more you invest in technique, practice, and mental preparation, the more you can trust that, come performance day, everything will flow seamlessly.
In conclusion, a successful performance isn't just about hitting the right notes. It's a holistic approach that involves choosing the right song, diligent study and rehearsal, mental preparation, and trusting yourself. This routine, inspired by my wedding experience, is a starting point. Feel free to adapt and tailor it to your unique style and needs. Remember, your performance journey is personal—embrace it, enjoy it, and let your voice be heard.
