A Better Way To Sing On Pitch

You might be wondering how to sing on pitch so that you can sing your favorite songs on repeat without guessing where the melody is going. In this episode, I got you covered with a better way to sing on pitch so that you can sing any song in tune every single time. Let's dive into it!

Common Mistakes in Singing on Pitch

To truly understand how to sing on pitch, you need to know some common mistakes that many beginner singers make. The first thing many beginner singers look at when it comes to singing on pitch is vocal technique. They notice that one note might not come out how it should be, and the first thing they grab for is a vocal technique to correct it.

This is a logical reaction, but there is one step that comes before that. If this step is not addressed, you will struggle to sing on pitch. This step is about training your internal hearing. Without knowing where the music is going, you cannot sing on pitch effectively.

Training Your Internal Hearing

The first step to singing on pitch is to train your internal hearing. A trained singer knows that it's not always a vocal technique problem. The first step is to hear where the music is supposed to go. If you can't hear it in your head, then there's no point in learning all the techniques because you won't know where the pitch is supposed to be.

Imagine throwing darts at a dartboard without having an aim. You can throw the dart to the left or right, but without a target, there's no direction. The same applies to singing.

Exercise to Train Internal Hearing

Now I'm going to give you a little exercise to help you train your internal hearing. Imagine the music and hear it inside your head before you sing it. Some singers find it easier to see the music, but because singing is auditory, try to hear it in your head.

Think any thought in your head. That's the feeling we're looking for when it comes to singing. Here's a practice run. I'll sing a sentence, and you sing it in your head, not out loud.

  • First sentence: "Build a home for you, for me."
  • Second sentence: "Until it disappears from me, from you."
  • Third sentence: "Now it's time to live, to dust."

Combining Internal Hearing with Vocal Technique

After training your internal hearing, the next step is to combine it with vocal technique. For example, in the last sentence, "Now it's time to live," some singers might sing off pitch because they push their voice. The secret here is to switch into mix voice.

Mix voice allows you to transition smoothly between registers, helping you sing on pitch. Using the right vocal techniques will help you experience vocal freedom and sing on pitch.

Conclusion

Training your internal hearing is the first step to singing on pitch. The second step is developing your mix voice. This combination will help you sing both high and low notes with ease. Thank you for joining me today. I appreciate your time and can't wait to see you in the next episode. Bye.
